Health and Social Care
What will I do in this course?
Health & Social Care is a OCR Level 1/2 National Certificate qualification, with the final grade being the equivalent to a GCSE.
It allows students to experience vocationally-related learning so as to enable them to decide if it is suitable for them.
How will I be assessed?
The course covers a number of units which are:
- Principles of care in health, social care and early years settings (examination).
- Supporting individuals through life events (coursework)
- Health Promotion Campaigns (coursework).
There is an external exam taken the June of Year 11 and all of the units are written in the form of portfolios and are internally assessed and externally moderated. All portfolios must pass to gain the qualification.
Qualifications that are awarded are Pass, Merit or Distinction level at levels 1 or 2.
During Year 10 and 11 students will complete the 3 Units from the list above.
Is there anything else I should consider and what are the career pathways?
Health and Social Care is a sound choice if you have an interest in Health and Social Care and the future employment possibilities it could offer you pathways into nursery and care related apprenticeships, and Level 3 Health courses, progressing into Nursing, Teaching, Social Work, Physiotherapy to name a few.

Is there an exam at the end of the course?
You will study 3 Units of work and only one of those is an exam. You take the exam in the June of Year 11.
Is there any coursework or assignments to do?
Yes, 60% of the course is made up of coursework, which is great if you do not like exams!! You will do 2 assignments over the 2 year course.
What sort of things will I do in class?
We try and keep our lessons interesting, carrying out role plays, watching videos, doing class discussions, creating posters, making notes and answering questions to check our understanding of the topics covered.
Do I need to know anything in particular before doing the course?
No, you just need to have an interest in an aspect of health and social care or a curiosity about the subject.
How will I be graded?
Your grades for assessments and assignments will be graded at either a Level 1 or a Level 2, Pass, Merit or Distinction level. You get points for all the units you complete, and at the end of the course these points are added up to give you your total points and a final grade for the 2 year course.
What could I do after this course? What can it lead on to?
We offer the Level 3 Health & Social Care course here at Streetly which follows on nicely from this level 2 course, people then choose to go to university to study midwifery, nursing, physiotherapy, psychology and teaching. You could also decide to go and study Early Years care or alternative courses at Level 3 or 4 at a college or do an apprenticeship.
This HSC course gives you a good understanding of all the types of care and how to deliver care.
