History in the Early Years.
In the Early Years, History is covered in Understanding The World. The topics covered are linked to Literacy and the weekly reading book.
The children need to know some similarities and differences between things in the past and now, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class. They also need to understand the past through settings, characters and events encountered in books read in class and storytelling.
At the end of the EYFS, children will be able to:
Talk about the lives of the people around them and their roles in society.
Know some similarities and differences between things in the past and now, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class.
Understand the past through settings, characters and events encountered in books read in class and storytelling.
Here are some of our fantastic poppies. We enjoyed learning about the importance of remembrance.
If The Dinosaurs Came Back
The children read this story and discussed what would happen if dinosaurs were living on Earth again. Would they make a good pet? Why? Why not? What would they do if dinosaurs returned to Earth.
Stellaluna
In this story, Stellaluna, a young fruit bat, becomes separated from her mother and finds her way to a nest of birds. The children are asked to think about what memories they have a baby. What makes them unique? How do our memories help us to talk about ourselves? They are also asked to consider what they can do now that they couldn't when they were a baby.
The Train Ride
The children use this story to discuss the journeys that they have been on in the past. The story encourages them to think about the places that they have visited in the past. What did they do there? Would they go again?
With this story, the children are also able to look at a variety of trains that are used throughout the world.
The children will also look at the lives of people around them and their roles in society .
