Overview
At Western House Academy, we deliver a high-quality history education to help our children gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. They will understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. Our children will be inspired to be curious about the past. They will be equipped to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement.
With History, every opportunity shapes a life by:
Developing key values:
Our children are provided with opportunities to explore the WHA values through their study of historical events, significant people and local studies. Children are respectful of others’ learning and are encouraged to be resilient in their own.
Developing knowledge:
At WHA, we implement a progressive curriculum throughout the whole school. History topics focus on knowledge and skills, as stated in the National Curriculum and The Early Years Foundation Stage, and are measured by key milestones which are often revisited, to ensure retention of both skills and knowledge and to stimulate pupils’ thoughts and allow for reflection. The development of tiered vocabulary, knowledge and skills enable pupils to acquire broader knowledge and understanding as they progress from EYFS to Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
Promoting equality
Our curriculum reflects the richness of world history and teaches pupils about societies and civilisations both within and beyond Europe. Pupils are encouraged to ask and answer important questions and to consider the choices, dilemmas and beliefs of people and communities in the past. Pupils become confident and questioning individuals with a mutual understanding of the historic origins of our ethnic and cultural diversity. Pupil’s individual needs, learning styles and requirements are recognised, valued and supported through our curriculum.
Providing experiences:
Our children will gain knowledge and skills, not just through experiences within the classroom, but also with the use of fieldwork and educational visits, enabling then to deepen their understanding of who and what has shaped our world today.
Where every opportunity shapes a life.
