Science information for parents

Welcome

Thank you for your support and taking the time to visit this site. I hope that you will find information you need to help your child succeed in Science here.

The links at the top of the page will take you to specific information about the courses, setting, homework and assessment for the Science Department.

By far the most useful thing students need support with at home is reviewing taught material to ensure that they understand and can remember what they have been taught. To help with this we have created a student website which gives access to material used in lessons, links to additional material and, for the upper school, practice exam questions and past papers. In addition we have created single sheet knowledge organisers for each topic these can be found on the appropriate page on the website. They contain the key information which every student needs to be able to recall. It is intended that they are a start point for revision, highlighting the key facts that must be memorised. Students should then practice applying these facts to help them solve problems.

Whilst there is no easy, quick way to assimilate all of the material that you child will be taught at school there are methods that have been found to be more effective and time efficient. These will be explained to your child in class and a summary can be found here.

Two other websites which students find very helpful are:

  • Quizlet - this is an app that can either be used on computers or downloaded to phones/tablets that is very good for learning keywords. The link will take you to some ready to use 'decks' of keyword cards for all year groups.

  • Seneca learning - this is a website that allows upper school students to review work covered and read ahead. It is highly interactive and has been created specifically to help students remember the key facts and ideas in the course.

If you have any additional questions or need any additional advice please contact your child's class teacher. Contact details can be found on the main school parent portal (link).
