Minibeast Mondays
From today, every Monday will be Minibeast Monday. We will be posting a 'Minibeasts with Jess' video that focuses on a specific insect, and then we will be asking you to create a fact-file about it.
This week's minibeast is spiders! Watch the video below and use the information to create a fact-file about spiders. We want you to write about what they eat, where they live, and what they look like. We would love you to do some drawing in your fact-file too! If you want to know something else about spiders, you could research this on the internet with your grown-up.
Kim's Game
Playing Kim´s game is a good way of developing your child´s memory skills and concentration – both skills useful for all learning.
Put 10 things from around the house on a tray - it could be things like a pencil, an orange, some cotton wool, a toy etc.. Ask your child to look carefully at them for about thirty seconds. Then take the tray away and ask them to call out what they remember.
Spicy challenge: Take one thing away and ask the child to spot what is missing. You can put more things on the tray as they get better.
You might be interested to know that the name of the game comes from Rudyard Kipling's story "Kim" where the character Kim plays this game as part of his training as a spy!
How many objects can you measure in your house using your hands or feet?
Remember:
Choose to use only your hands OR your feet for each measurement.
Don't leave any gaps between your feet or hands whilst measuring.
Questions for you to try at home:
How many hands tall is your table? How many feet long is your bed? Can you estimate how many feet something will be and then check your answer? If you used your hands and feet to measure the same object would the result be different? Can you work out why? If your adult at home measured something with their feet would they get the same result as you? Can you explain why?
Spicy challenge: See if you can record your findings.
Dinosaur fact-file:
Create a mini fact-file about dinosaurs. You could pick your favourite dinosaur, or you could make one about lots of different kinds of dinosaur.
Draw pictures of the facts including where they lived, what they like to eat, and what they looked like.
Here’s a link to Cbeebies (click on the dinosaurs), where you can watch information videos about lots of different dinosaurs.
Spicy challenge: Can you use your sounds to label your pictures? Or for an extra spicy challenge, use your sounds to write super dinosaur fact sentences.
Shape dinosaurs
Using some paper, cut out different shapes and stick them together to create your own dinosaur.
How many different kinds of shapes will you use to create your dinosaur? Remember to put your creations onto Tapestry, we love seeing all of your super learning!
Spicy challenge: Can you identify each of the shapes that you have used? How can you tell what each of the shapes are?
