English is about the development of key skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. It is also about literature: appreciating varieties of fiction, poetry, drama and literary non-fiction; widening and deepening experience as readers and gaining the confidence and ability to read critically.
Mathematics is beautiful, enriching and challenging. Pure mathematics gives us the tools to look for patterns in the real world. Mathematics is a habit of mind. The mathematics developed in this century will be the basis for the technological and scientific innovations developed in the next. The thought processes, the ways of looking at things, the habits of mind used by mathematicians, computer scientists and scientists will be mirrored in systems that will influence almost every aspect of our daily lives.
Science is a way of developing the use of scientific methods, and an understanding of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. It allows you to explore your curiosities about the world around you and offers a wide variety of transferable skills that you may use in the future.
History
History is the study of change and continuity with particular focus upon key individuals, governments and movements throughout time. In particular History will allow you to learn from the past and to gain a greater understanding of how the world interacts today, based upon our shared histories.
Geography
Geography is the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments. Geographers explore both the physical properties of the earth’s surface and the human societies spread across it. They also examine how human culture interacts with the natural environment, and the way that locations and places can have an impact on people. Geography seeks to understand where things are found, why they are there, and how they develop and change over time.
Religious Education
Religious Education is the study of religion, philosophy and ethics. You will be exposed to all of the 6 main world religions with an emphasis on Christianity due to the school’s Christian ethos. However, students will also get a good understanding of all world views due to the multi-faith setting that the school supports.
Spanish or French
Languages are part of the cultural richness of our society and the world in which we live and work. Learning Spanish or French gives you the opportunities to develop your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and to express themselves with increasing confidence, independence and creativity.
Art, Craft and Design
Art is something we do, a verb. Art and Design is an expression of our thoughts, emotions and intuitions which encourages imagination, observation, and decision making skills. It is about sharing the way we experience the world visually, and communicating concepts that sometimes cannot portrayed by words alone.
Design and Technology
Design and Technology is an area of study that focuses on planning, designing and creating products which people use. The knowledge you will gain will support further study in areas such as Manufacturing, Engineering and Architecture. You will design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. You will also study Food Preparation & Nutrition, which will give you the skills you need to understand how the food we eat helps us to live a healthy balanced lifestyle and how to create it.
Drama
Drama is action and can be structured as verse or prose and movement. It communicates a portrayal of life or character with parts of conflict or emotion. It can take any art form and is constantly changing. Drama is an integral part of our diverse school community, instilling ambitious and forward thinking artistic visions. It allows students to engage and empathise with characters and stories in an atmosphere of equality and empowerment.
Music
Music is the art of sound. Through combinations of rhythm, melody, harmony and form music creates a vehicle for expression, narrative, intellectual stimulus and beauty. Music touches the soul and brings people together. Without words music can communicate the deepest emotions and the strongest connections.
Physical Education
Physical Education is the study of physical movement, safety and health and well-being. Physical education helps develop and maintain confidence, well-being and social skills that will benefit all aspects of your school and social life.
PSHCE
PSHCE stands for Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education. PSHCE is a school subject through which you will develop the knowledge, skills and attributes that you need to keep yourself healthy, safe, and prepared for life and work in modern Britain. PSHCE lessons will have an impact on both your academic and non-academic development.
Computer Science
Computing equips students to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with Mathematics, Science, and Design and Technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. The core of computing is computer science, in which students are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming.
