Tips for parents to smoothen the process of online learning for their children:
*Limit distractions: It is important to keep your child’s attention focused on their classes. A ‘digital quarantine’ might be necessary for this. Limit their use of devices as much as you can or until they complete all their schoolwork.
*Make a learning space: Just like you have a designated space where you work, create a similar space for your kids. Make sure the place is quiet and comfortable for your child to be productive. This way they will be strictly devoted to learning.
*Give them breaks: Routines are most important even when your child is being schooled from home. It is a good idea to replicate the same routine they follow at school. Set up alarms that mark the end of a class and give them a break or recess at the same time they would get at school. This will help to keep them on schedule.
*Allow them to interact with friends: Your children have a lot of social interactions at school that they are missing due to the lockdown. Allow your kids to connect with their friends online through video chats or messaging. You can also set up a video call with other parents. Video chatting is a good way to connect with people along with staying safe during the pandemic.
*Limit screen time: Your children already have a lot of screen exposure and it is likely that they will look for some more when they take breaks. It is important that you restrict their screen time during this time. Try mixing in old-school teaching techniques. You can have a hard copy of worksheets that your child can solve, and schools can help in providing them. You should encourage reading paper books more than online especially during a time like this.
*Keep in touch with fellow parents: Each parent is going through a different experience handling their children during the pandemic. It might be helpful what tips are working for you and what are not with other parents who are going through the same.
Don't let children treat it like a vacation: Remind your child that their education comes first. It may seem like a vacation to them and they may not seem motivated enough to study. Keep reminding them that important things like classes, tests and their grades should not be affected just because they are at home or because classes have moved online.
Following skills will be developed in your child with online learning:
*Good Time Management: Your child needs to be online at the right time.
*Effective Communication: Your child asks for help, makes contact with other students and the teacher and describes any *problems she/he has with learning materials.
*Independent Study Habit: Your child maintains the self-discipline to stick to a schedule.
*Self-Motivation: Your child will maintain focus on the work set.
*Adaptability: Your child accepts the temporary change and adapts their approach.
Effective Parent-Teacher Participation:
*Parents are vital partners in education. They influence their children’s attitudes about learning, and support learning at home. They are a vital link between home and school. And when they become involved in the life of the school, they make our schools better places to learn, grow and thrive.
