Hebrew

Hi Families

I’m very excited to start Hebrew with the students again this year. We are committed to teaching each student individually, at their own pace with an in-person class on Sunday and opt in lessons online. I will be reaching out to ask if you would like to schedule the weekly sessions.

We are again using the KTAV primer for those beginning to decode. It’s uniquely suited for our purposes.  As soon as all of the letters and vowels are learned, we begin learning prayer.

We are using a version of the siddur that the congregation uses for prayer, but this does not have transliterations. This Mishkan Tifillah Journal (or Journal for short) should be with each grade 5-7 student whenever they are in the shul.  They will need to have their Journal with them for services, Hebrew class, individual tutoring and, of course, to study at home. It is a yellow hardcover book and was given out at the end of last year. Please let us know if you did not receive a copy. If lost, you can order you a replacement copy. Students will keep this book.

We are adding 2 new components to the Hebrew curriculum.

      1) Students will highlight the Hebrew words and meanings of significant words in each prayer, to begin to get more meaning from the prayers.

       2) Students are encouraged to work with an adult at home once or twice a month to reinforce the words and answer questions about the prayers that are in the Journal. Grade 5-7 students should look over the list of prayers per grade inside the Journal and take advantage of the virtual Hebrew sessions included in tuition to continue to make progress. They may also want to come at 5:30 on Weds for the pizza dinner and to work with peers as well before the service starts at 6 pm.

As always, let me know if you have questions or comments.
