WEEK 1 ACTION ITEMS
Discuss Student-Tutor Policy Agreement together and students sign
It's possible that students meet with more than one tutor in a semester, so they are required to review the agreement with every tutor during the first tutoring session.
Discuss goals for the semester together using the Goal Sheet Form
Students will complete a Goal Sheet in each of their first tutoring sessions
Review Course Syllabus and Canvas page together
**Please Note: Only the student needs to complete these forms. We have provided them here for your reference.
HELPFUL TIPS
Spend 2-3 minutes crafting an agenda at the start of your tutoring session to help you and your student get the most from your time, maintain focus, and give you both specific points to reflect back on at the end of the session.
Use the following templates (or design your own) to help plan in advance, maintain a routine, and optimize learning readiness and organization.
SESSION BREAKDOWN
SETTING SESSION AGENDA
FIRST SESSION INTRODUCTIONS
Review Student-Tutor Policy Agreement
Assure the student of confidentiality
Assess the needs of the student:
What has worked for them in the past?
When do they have difficulties?
What is their learning style?
Ask the student to identify 1-3 goals for the for the session
SUBSEQUENT SESSIONS
Ask the student to identify 1-3 goals for the session
Prioritize goals by urgency and importance
Set manageable targets for the session which you can reasonably reach during the allotted time
BODY OF SESSIONS
When addressing broad topics, begin your work by breaking subjects into smaller subtopics
Outline formats are particularly useful and allow both of you to later refer back to material you've covered
Evaluate your student's class and reading notes, making sure the student has identified all the main ideas
When you feel the student has achieved the desired level of content or mastery, have them summarize and elaborate the material you've addressed
When moving to a new subject, discuss how the student's secured learning relates to new material you're about to cover
Be sure that both you and the student ask questions and that you are both involved in the tutoring session, not just you
Don't be afraid to admit when you don't know the answer - this may indicate what you need to review as well
END OF SESSIONS
Be sure to summarize the session together before ending. Highlight what was accomplished and what you expect the student to accomplish before your next session
Arrange a time and location for the next session. Whenever possible, plan in advance what you'll be addressing next time
Close the session on a positive note. Remind the student of their new knowledge and skills, and the progress they've made during the session
Helpful Tips:
Use this sheet to create goals for a session to help provide some structure
This sheet can be also used to create goals for the student to complete for the next session
Physical copies of the sheet are available in the Tutor Resource Station
