Using Measurement Tools

ANALYZE: Broken Ruler Task

Perhaps no task better illustrates the challenges students have in understanding measurement and measurement tools than the Broken Ruler Task.

Consistently and around the world, research shows that a significant percentage of students grades 2-8 and higher are unable to correctly use a ruler that doesn't begin at zero, results that are substantiated on the Junior EQAO Assessment.

ANALYZE: Weight Scales

Look at the weight scales below.

Talk about makes these scales so difficult to read, What do students need to know in order to use these scales correctly? How would you help students develop skills in reading these scales? Talk about the relationship between Number Sense and Measurement -- their connections, their uniqueness and the ways that can work together to deepen mathematical understanding.
