Session 3

Scales and Measurement Tools

Introduction

Welcome Back!

Tired of seeing students do the protractor shuffle as they try to figure out the measure of an angle? Shocked at hearing that well over half of our grade six students have significant difficulties measuring a length when given a broken ruler? Maybe it’s because using a measurement tool is far more complex than we thought and for many students there are critical concepts missing in their understanding. This session will delve deeper into this idea and have us build our own scales and measuring devices in order to better understand and help students use the tools of the measurement trade.

Preparing for the Session

1. 'Handouts' are made available at point of use; but to help with advance planning, here is a List of Materials that you might wish to print or gather in advance.

2. Think of sessions 2 and 3 as one long session completed over 2 (or more!) time periods. Pick up where you left off in session 2. Then move into session 3 -- and yes, session 3 is much shorter. At least that's what we're hoping:)

All that being said, we do have a Session 3 Proposed Timeline that you can choose to use as a facilitation guideline but (stop when when you've heard this before!) let the conversations and the learning dictate your pace.

3. While it's certainly not a prerequisite for you to participate in a team, it's often more enjoyable when you have someone to share the learning with. So consider who you could invite as there are multiple opportunities for discussion.

We're glad you can join us and we hope you find this approach to professional development helpful.

TASK: Reflecting on our In-Between Work

Consider what learning you've had the opportunity to apply since our last session.

Talk about some of the diagnostic tasks or sample learning tasks you tried from sessions 1 and 2 and analyze some of the student work that you found interesting.

Discuss and Share:

- What did you try?

- What did your learn?

- What are you still wondering about?

- What are your next moves?

Record key points from your discussion in the Collaborative Notebook.

Use this notebook to connect with your colleagues around the province to share thinking and ask questions. Get the most out of this notebook by logging in to your Google Account. If you don't have one, you can get a free one here.
