TASK: Analyze Student Thinking

Luke’s Story

Luke is a grade 6 student. He can use a standard measuring cup to measure capacity. For example, when asked, he can use the scale on a beaker to measure out quantities of water and can show where 250 mL would be. Luke was asked to turn a clear plastic cup into a measuring cup.

To do this task, he was given a wide range of materials from which to choose, including a variety of lids, spoons, toy cups, a medicine glass, a fine tipped pen, a bucket of water and a ruler. Luke chose the pen and the ruler and transferred the scale from the ruler to the side of the container.
