Measurement 2.3

Standardized Units

WATCH: Introducing Standard Units

TASK: Brainstorming and Sorting Standard Units

Brainstorm standard measurement units that are used in day to day life.

List each unit on a separate sticky note. Then sort your units in more than one way.

Take a photo of each sort and post it to our Collaborative Notebook.

WATCH: Overview of the Metric System

TASK: Exploring Patterns in the Metric System

Explore the patterns in the metric system. Download the chart (Relationships between Place Value and the Metric System) and compare with your brainstormed list, noting any that were missing. Discuss the following.

1. Were there any metric units missing from your list? Why are some units used while others are not? Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of exposing students to all the units.

2. What are advantages of the metric system over the older imperial system? Is one more accurate than the other? Talk about ways that we could use the metric system to help students understand and visualize our base 10 number system.

4. Record your reflections and insights on our Collaborative Notebook. Take some time to scroll through the musings of other groups and add your comments.

WATCH: Metric Toc? (optional)

TASK: Create a Metric Clock (optional)

Take some time to discuss as a team and then design a clock based on the metric system. What will be your base unit? How will you generate the names for your other units? Is it possible to metricize all time, including the calendar? Why or why not?

We love pictures!! Please share your creations and wonderings on our Collaborative Notebook.
