As stated on this Florida Department of Education website, you may be able to demonstrate mastery of the GKT by having obtained specific scores on the GRE. Mastery is determined on a case-by-case basis by the Florida Department of Education. If you decide to apply for your teacher certification by submitting GRE scores in lieu of taking the GKT, be aware that if mastery is not granted, you will will have to take and pass the GKT during your first year of teaching in accordance with Miami-Dade County Public School expectations.
How do I show mastery of the GKT through my scores on the GRE?
If you wish to claim mastery of the GKT through the GRE, you should have taken the GRE and obtained your scores no later than April. Once you have passed your SAE and you have let Xavier know that you passed your SAE and would like to submit GRE scores, Xavier will prompt you to apply for your Statement of Eligibility for Teacher Certification starting in May. When filling out your application for your Statement of Eligibility for Teacher Certification, you will attach your GRE scores to your application for the FLDOE to consider.
How do I know if the FLDOE has accepted my GRE scores in lieu of the GKT?
Once you have applied for your Statement of Eligibility (SOE) for Teacher Certification, it will take the FLDOE anywhere from 3-5 months to process. Once SOE is processed, you will receive a PDF letter through email letting you know whether mastery was granted. Because it takes 3-5 months for your SOE to process, there is a possibility that you will be informed during your first year of teaching that you will have to take the GKT in order to satisfy the testing requirement.
If you’d like to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to reach out to Xavier!
