This course enables students to develop their skills in producing and presenting art by introducing them to new ideas, materials, and processes for artistic exploration and experimentation. Students will create art works that integrate the fundamental components of design known as elements (colour, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value). Students explore design principles (balance, contrast, emphasis, harmony, movement, proportion, rhythm and repetition, unity, and variety) and use them to arrange design elements to produce visual effects. They will be expected to develop an artistic vocabulary while learning how to analyze, interpret, and criticize their own and others works of art. Students will apply the elements and principles of design when exploring the creative process. Students will use the critical analysis process to reflect on and interpret art within a personal, contemporary, and historical context. By the end of this course, students will study the characteristics of particular historical art periods (like Medieval and Gothic Art) and cultural art styles (including Indian, Chinese, and Japanese).
