Join us for our Grade 8 OPEN HOUSE -- December 3rd, 2025 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm
The study of the French language is an important part of the curriculum. French is not only one of Canada’s two official languages but is also widely used around the world. Knowledge of a second language is valuable for a number of reasons. In our courses, students strengthen their first-language skills, enhance their critical and creative thinking abilities, and increase their understanding of other cultures. In addition, the ability to communicate in another language provides students with a distinct advantage in a number of careers, both in Canada and internationally. At SCI, our courses focus on students becoming proficient in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

All French students take part in an African drumming workshop each year. This is a fun way for students to be exposed to French culture and have a hands-on experience of the music!
A representative from the YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange (SWSE) comes to speak to our students every year. This is a national program offering opportunities for youth to improve their second official language skills, explore another part of Canada, and gain valuable work experience.
A Certificate of Achievement in Core French is awarded for completing the four-credit Core French program, and students can also earn the internationally recognized DELF certificate by taking the DELF exam (not offered in school).
International travel opportunities: Students from SCI have travelled to France, Amsterdam, Italy, and/or Spain!
