In order to keep our school a friendly, caring and clean place it is important that everyone follows these important rules of behaviour and courtesy:
Attend and be on time for all classes.
Show respect for yourself, others and school property.
Comply with all requests from staff members.
Use language and behaviour which is not offensive, sexist, racist or homophobic.
Maintain our clean school environment.
Do not smoke anywhere on school property.
Dress appropriately at school and at school related activities.
Use personal electronic devices in an appropriate and respectful manner.
The standards of behaviour outlined in the SCI Code of Conduct shall apply to all members of the school community, including students, parents and guardians, teachers and other school staff, Board members, volunteers and visitors:
on school property;
while traveling on a school bus that is owned by the Board or that is under contract to the Board;
in-school sport activities;
off-site school-sponsored activities; or
circumstances where engaging in activity will have an impact on the school climate.
Students shall clearly understand the behaviour that is expected of them at SCI. These expectations are discussed with students by home form teachers and in grade assemblies at the beginning of the year. Students who fail to abide by the SCI Code of Conduct will face appropriate consequences ranging from informal counselling to formal suspension from school. When considering consequences, the administration will consult the Board’s policy and administrative procedures.
When students breach the Code of Conduct, consequences will be consistent with progressive discipline philosophy. Progressive discipline is a whole-school approach that utilizes a continuum of interventions, supports and consequences to address inappropriate student behaviour and to build on strategies that promote positive behaviours. These guidelines are intended to ensure a safe, positive and inviting school environment.
Interventions (in no particular order) may include but are not limited to:
Discussion with a teacher, member of support staff, Vice-Principal or Principal
Attendance/performance/behaviour contracts
Reflection sheet
Parental contact and involvement in applying appropriate remedy
Loss of privilege to participate in specified school activities
Peer mediation/conflict mediation
Individual or group counselling
Written or oral apology
Detention
Restitution for damage or stolen property
Formal Suspension
Contact Toronto Police Services if necessary
