Steps to English Proficiency (STEP) is a framework for assessing and monitoring the language acquisition and literacy development of English language learners across The Ontario Curriculum.
The STEP resource includes oral, reading and writing continua, to support students requiring English as a Second Language (ESL) program. For students requiring an English Literacy Development (ELD) program, a continua of English language proficiency as well as literacy skills has been developed along with an Orientation to School Life in Ontario continuum. This resource was developed to guide instruction and classroom-based assessment. ESL/ELD teachers, classroom teachers, and school leaders can use the STEP continua to assess and record evidence of students’ language proficiency progress gathered through day-to-day classroom learning experiences. Information from STEP, gathered over time and in various learning contexts, will be useful for school leaders, teachers, students, and parents in supporting the learning and teaching of ELL.
