Modification of some or all of the curriculum expectations may be required to support English language learners, especially those who are in the early stages of learning English or those who have had limited prior schooling.
The following example indicates the types of modifications that may be appropriate.
Grade 8 language expectation, Writing strand: (Students will) write complex texts of a variety of lengths, using a wide range of forms.
Modified expectation: (The student will) write patterned short texts using specified forms.

When modifying curriculum expectations for English language learners, we can:
simplify the language of the expectation, to match the student's level of English proficiency
reduce the number of expectations
