Use a variety of texts: simple texts with visuals, wordless picture books, dual-language books, e-books
Introduce musical chants and poems that reinforce everyday expressions and patterned speech
Allow students to read about a topic in their first language
Use small-group guided reading to provide individualized instruction in a low-risk setting based on students’ needs, experiences, and interests
Select texts that are connected to students’ experiences to bridge understanding of new concepts and vocabulary
Scaffold comprehension by previewing texts, discussing features and vocabulary, making predictions, etc
Allow students to respond to texts orally rather than in writing
Encourage students to read first-language or dual-language books as literacy skills transfer across languages
