Richlands Middle School
Keyboarding and Computer Applications Instructor
Technology is changing so fast . I like to think outside the box so that I am able to inspire students to keep up with the changes. In my keyboarding application classes, I am able to inspire students to create budgets, fill out resumes, practice internet safety, and engage in discussions with police officers. I like to focus on real world experiences.
What are some new programs or activities you are using that other teachers might like to try? I use gamification to motivate students to learn by playing games, and they do not realize they are learning skills at the same time. We use the sites: Mysteinbach , ABCYa, and typing.com.
How do you keep your programs updated? I search and find new things to try. The biggest challenge is keeping students interested and having fun. Finding new programs keeps class fresh and challenging for my students.
How do you stay updated? I attend regular conferences and take courses. The best one I have been to is TechSplash over the summer in Abingdon at the Higher Ed Center. I plan to attend Region VII Computer Science Superstar Summit this spring as well.
How do you plan to implement Google tools into your instruction?
I took a Google Apps class at UVA-Wise. I plan to set up Google classroom in my keyboarding class to give assignments and tests that can be automatically graded. My favorite part is the autosave feature and the ability to work offline when you do not have an internet connection.

Flash to HTML5 - What the End of Life for Flash Will Mean for You?
When we go to Google Chrome we see at the top of the screen their notice that they will no longer support Flash after December 2020. What does this mean? The web resources you use will need to convert to HTML5. This is a change that we as technology staff can not control or fix. You will just need to hang on until your favorite sites do the conversion.
If you want to read a little more about it, click on this link. www.focuseduvation.com/flash-html5-end-life-flash-will-mean/
While saving emails as PDFs works for email content. Any attachments will not be saved as PDFs using this method. Attachments will have to be downloaded and saved separately.
