At SJPII, we believe that ALL students can learn with the appropriate supports in place to maximize opportunities for success.
At SJPII, our Special Education department supports students in grades 9-12 with various identifications and exceptionalities who are accessing a variety of programs and pathways. Our department works closely with classroom teachers, Guidance Counsellors, school Administration, board level personnel and outside agencies to access the necessary supports and resources for students.
We are also proud to offer 2 Intensive Support Programs in our school, supporting students of all abilities.
The needs of our students are at the heart of our decision-making. We have a focus on supporting our students, goal setting and transition planning to support each student's individual pathway.
The role of the Special Education Department is to provide support for students that have an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Our staff work with classroom teachers, guidance counsellors, and parents and guardians to support the student in their academic success. Each student that has an IEP will be assigned a Special Education Monitoring Teacher.
One important difference at the secondary level is that students are NOT withdrawn as they were in elementary to work on modified curriculum unless they are in an Intensive Support Program (ISP). Students with an IEP will be required to meet the same Ministry Curriculum Expectations as their classmates if they are planning to obtain an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (with the exception of students in an Intensive Support Program). All students are encouraged to seek support through our Student Achievement Centre (SAC) for support with their academics. Students are entitled to their accommodations in all school related settings - even in their classrooms.
If your child has an IEP and is coming from a TCDSB elementary school - they will be assigned a Special Education Monitoring Teacher at the beginning of the school year. In this case, the IEP will be carried over from the elementary school.
If your child has an IEP and is coming from a non-TCDSB elementary school - it is best to contact the Special Education Department Head directly to inform them of the IEP. You can also fill out a Google Form (see icon) to let us know once you have been accepted into our school to ensure that an IEP is put in place in a timely manner.
If you have any questions about our program or require further information, please contact the Department Head.
