The TCDSB created an EQUITY ACTION PLAN (EAP) for 2023-2026 to support indigenous, black, and 2SLGBTQ+ students in the board. My students were asked to provide critical feedback on the plan, and create 500-750 word essays, and subsequent speeches, to share their thoughts and concerns. Below are a few examples of their work.
HEAVEN wrote about adding "class" to the EAP, and helping kids with food & housing.
STORY wrote about expanding black to BIPOC, and eliminating grades for feedback.
NEVAEH wrote about adding more substance to the 2SLGBTQ+ section of the plan.
DYLAN wants the board to think more about hunger and homelessness.
ALEXANDRA wrote about religion, and questions why ALL students aren't allowed to learn in the TCDSB.
LIFE wrote about improving the anti-black racism section of the plan.
Each year, my students write a "personal narrative" - a story written in the first person, about their lives. They are mostly based on real events, and on occasion embellished a little for thematic flair. Students read their stories to each other, the class, their parents, and teacher, incorporate feedback, and submit to the NYT contest. Here are our entries from 2021.
At the beginning of the year, students talk about their personal identities, and stereotypes. We watch Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's TED talk and discuss the danger of a single story. Then, we smash the steretypes with these "Just because" poems. They are personal, powerful, and heartfelt. Enjoy.
In spring 2022, our grade 6 class went up against K-12 classrooms from across the country in a Canadian Geographic Contest to show how humans are impacting the planet, and how we can help. Here is what they produced, which won us the GRAND PRIZE for the contest!
