Every year that there is a municipal, provincial, or federal election in the region where I teach, my class wholeheartedly participates in the "student vote" program run by CIVIX. Students LOVE to get engaged in this real, hands-on learning opportunity.
Every year we study Canada's residential school system, and their impact on First Nations Communities in Canada. Students learn about and present on the lives of survivors, and sometimes interview them. Leffe created an informative video about the Land Acknowledgement in early 2022.
We watched episodes of the CBC series "Anne with an E" and worked with social sciences experts from York University to study and discuss issues surrounding race, class, and gender. Students and families learn together through compelling Canadian historical fiction.
Each year, I help run a Canadian Geographic Challenge so our students can expand their geographic and geological awareness and expertise. I find that students are highly motivated by the opportunity to share their knowledge outside the classroom, and challenges and competitions like this one help inspire them to learn more and do their best.
