Here you'll find stories and writing regarding what I'm reading and learning about in education.
My Nanna, who lived for 106 years in New Brunswick, had a sharp memory and lived on her own until she was 97. When she turned 100+ and lived in a long term care residence, she started to lose her short term memory. When I would remind her (from call to call, and sometimes within a call!) that I was teacher in Toronto, she would say, "Ohhh Brennan ... be good to those kids. You never know what their life is like at home." This wisdom guides my teaching practice, and informed this story I wrote in November 2021.
I have been working with my colleagues for years to get permission to trial report cards without grades. We want to focus on student strengths and interests, and nurture "feedback focused learning oriented classrooms" - read the letter to find out more about our philosophy, and efforts. January 2022.
Students love to work, be creative, and express themselves, especially when given the opportunity to do so in the direction of mastery, with autonomy, and purpose. I love doing "feedback sessions" to show student work, and provide the kids with teacher and peer feedback, ahead of deadlines, so they can revise their work and submit even better products. This process is why we have so many award-winning submissions to contests around the world by students in my classroom. Read this story from October 2021 for a glimpse into our process.
