Students in my class read every day, for at least 30 minutes, usually first thing in the morning. We read books we love on our own, simply for the love of it. Reading expands vocabulary, improves writing skills, and takes us to worlds far from our classrooms.
We learn from Matthew Kay how to listen actively, and with patience, how to control our voice, and contribute to meaningful conversation.
Each year we also participate in several writing competitions, fro the Habitat for Humanity "Meaning of Home" poetry contest, to the New York Times Personal Narrative and Review contests.
Each year, my students participate in the New York Times 15-Second Vocabulary Video Challenge. In 2021, two of my grade 6 students were top 30 finalists, among over 1500 entries!
This competition helps students learn about spelling, definitions, and the beauty in vocabulary. "Words are so cool!" students often exclaim, after their deep-dives into the meanings of the coolest words they can find.
We use DIBELS8 reading screeners to determine the reading strengths and areas for improvement for all our students. The screeners measure:
LNF = Letter Naming Fluency
PSF = Phonemic Segmentation Fluency
NWF = Nonsense Word Fluency
WRF = Word Reading Fluency
ORF = Oral Reading Fluency
MAZE = Reading Comprehension
