At BBCES we pride ourselves in Building Brighter Futures one child at a time. It is our mission to learn alongside our students, to lead by example, and to inspire our students as we equip them with STEM literacy skills that will prepare them for their next level of learning. One way students enhance their soft skills is through direct instruction on the 7 habits and leadership job opportunities. Students in 4th through 6th grade apply for a variety of leadership jobs that allow them to learn effective ways to communicate and interact with others. Moreover, students serving on the student leadership team and STEAM squad are sometimes asked to lead professional development and STEAM events at our school, such as teaching board members how to code and showcasing our school's STEAM integration and authentic learning at the Leadership Sylacauga community event. Finally, students also demonstrate STEM content knowledge representative of STEM literacy outcomes through the use of collaboration rubrics. We understand that collaboration is the key to their future successes, so collaboration is an expectation for all students at BBCES. These rubrics set the expectations for the skills necessary to successfully collaborate with others.
B.B. Comer Elementary is home to many student leaders, some of which have led professional development for Central Office staff as well as classroom teachers. Several student leaders visited Dr. Lacey and board members to give them a hands-on learning experience with coding and to teach them how we incorporate coding at BBCES. In addition, students on the Tiger Techsperts and STEAM Squad have led coding lessons for teachers and students in kindergarten through sixth grade.
Our school has participated in Leadership Sylacauga Lunch and Learn for the past 3 years. During this annual event, students showcased their learning about STEAM concepts through classroom visits, hands-on student demonstrations of technology gadgets we use at BBCES, as well as modeling AMSTI math games for local community leaders and guests.
Technology also plays a huge part in student learning and achievement. They also learn to use Beebots, Spheros, Ozobots, and other forms of hands-on technology. Younger students begin with activities to get familiar with the concept of coding. These activities encourage students to become digital citizens, computational thinkers, innovative designers and knowledge constructors.
At BBCES, we prepare students for the next level of learning through communication. Communication deepens understanding by students being able to communicate thoughts and ideas. Students are encouraged to explain their thinking often and to effectively communicate with their peers and teachers.
