At B.B. Comer Elementary School, we have a shared vision for STEAM as well as leadership structures in place to support effective implementation. Our school has grown leaps and bounds with STEAM integration and instructional practices over the years. Collaboration is a major part of teaching and learning at our school. Each teacher participates in a DLP cycle and meets weekly with a coach to work on tech tools, classroom activities, and specific STEAM instructional needs of that teacher. Not only do teachers at BBCES receive coaching from the DLP, but they receive impactful learning strategies from the ROARR and MSIT Teams. These teams work together and offer support to teachers in all academic areas.
BBCES has a Digital Learning Partner program. This initiative helps to increase educational equity and powerful use of technology through instructional coaching that is provided by trained teachers. All of our teachers at BBCES participate in coaching cycles where they meet with the DLP coach on a weekly basis. During these meetings and classroom visits the teachers and coach follow a coaching model and collaborate on the best strategies to use to meet the individual needs of all students.
The DLP coach follows a specific schedule for each cycle and uses the coaching model to help teachers improve their craft.
Teachers meet throughout the school year to receive training on various technology tools to implement in their classrooms. Additionally, classroom teachers can participate in book studies to assist with integrating technology effectively in their classrooms. During the 2019-2020 school year, K-3rd grade teachers are involved in a book study with the book, Google Apps for Littles, in order to enhance their technology integration with our younger elementary students at BBCES.
Teachers across the district are participating in the STEAM Cohort.
Teachers who participated in the Talladega County STEAM Cohort met together twice during the regular school year. Each time teachers were trained on the use and integration of various technology tools that could be easily transitioned to the classroom. Teachers also worked together in small groups to develop sample projects using the new tools.
Members of the ROARR team met during the summer to plan for the upcoming school year.
Our Leadership Team is known as The ROARR Team. This team consists of our administrators, counselor, DLP Coach, Media Specialist, STEAM teacher, ARI Reading Specialist, a teacher leader and Math coach. The Leadership Team plans together to help with STEAM implementation. The Leadership Team meets twice a month to discuss the implementation of STEAM throughout all content areas. The Leadership Team is the support system of our STEAM endeavor.
The MSIT (Mathematics School Improvement Team) team consists of an administrator, our Math coach and a teacher from each grade level. This is a collaborative team that works together to impact the mathematical learning for students at B.B. Comer Elementary School.
