Professional development at B.B Comer Elementary School is an ongoing process that involves improvement in student learning and instructional practices. In order to grow professionally in the area of STEM education, our teachers have attended and presented sessions at the Talladega County STEAM by Design Fall Conference since 2017. B.B. Comer Elementary School implements PLCs and we work to sustain the structure of embedded PD in our PLC meetings. At BBCES, we believe professional development should provide all teachers in our building with skills and content knowledge for successful blended learning which will directly impact student achievement. Therefore, teachers attend face to face meetings as well as online professional development, also known as PD in Your PJs, to have authentic, purposeful technology integration modeled for them.
The needs of today's learners demand innovative and progressive instruction. We strive to ensure our professional development programs are aligned with our data and are needs-based. STEAM/PBL has been at the forefront of those PD opportunities for B.B Comer Elementary School with the implementation of our STEAM Lab, Hour of Code, and Digital Learning Day. Teachers have the opportunity for side by side PD with the assistance of our STEAM teacher and DLP Coach.
Through the DLP program teachers are able to improve their practice and positively impact student growth. Mrs. Herman (DLP Coach) closely works with Mrs. Voss (STEAM Teacher) to plan and implement engaging STEAM lessons for all students. The 21st century skills as well as authentic inquiry can be found in the lessons they create. During this process, the classroom teachers collaborate with Mrs. Herman and Mrs. Voss to devise and carry out a plan to integrate STEAM into specific content areas as well as PBL projects they are currently working on with their students. Not only do teachers complete STEAM lessons in their classroom, but they attend weekly STEAM/Technology sessions with both of these mentors.
After thoughtful planning with teachers and coaches, students are using the Engineering Design Process to create a movable bird's nest. Mrs. Voss is on hand to offer support where needed.
Expert Down the Hall teachers improve the craft of blended learning in the classrooms to help colleagues improve student performance. As a county, Expert Down the Hall teachers come together to unpack technology and computational thinking standards and learn about new technology integration tools to help teachers use them more efficiently in the classroom. Each year, 1 teacher from all Talladega County Schools participate in this initiative. These teachers bring back their learning and share with their colleagues during grade level meetings and whole group faculty meetings.

BBCES offers many professional development opportunities to our teachers. PD in your PJs and Tech Tip Tuesdays are just a few of the ways teachers receive professional development. Video tutorials are created using technology tools such as Screencastify, Adobe Spark Video, Vimeo and Smore. These resources contain information about new tech tools, how to use assessment data, as well as everyday school information. Teachers and other staff can view these resources on their own time and from the comfort of their own couch. These tutorials are also saved in their email, so that teachers can refer back to them as often as needed. All administrators, teachers, and staff are encouraged to participate in these professional development sessions.
