Community involvement is highly encouraged for all parents, teachers and students at B.B. Comer Elementary. This involvement is key to the success of our students. The families of BBCES have access to key information from various resources. Our teachers utilize multiple platforms to communicate current events with families. Families are invited to attend STEAM nights, Literacy Nights, Meet the Teacher Nights etc. to learn more about what is happening at our school. Voice and choice is also given through yearly Title 1 surveys.
Since beginning our STEAM initiative in 2016, we have held Family STEAM Nights at BBCES. During these events, parents are invited to explore our collaborative STEAM Lab spaces, to visit classrooms, and to learn how STEAM is integrated across our school.
Parent attendance has grown over the years with each Family STEAM Night event. In 2016, we only had a handful of parents to attend. However, as our parents have become more knowledgeable about our STEAM initiative and its impact on our students, the attendance numbers have grown each year. During our Family STEAM Night on September 3, 2019, we had nearly 100 of our students' families to attend!
During the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school years, we had virtual STEAM nights. Parents have been able to learn more about our STEAM program through a virtual presentation. The presentation includes STEAM challenges that parents and students can complete at home with ordinary items they may have in there home. Our students have loved being able to share our STEAM program and have so much fun doing the challenges with their parents.
Many students attend the after-school program BRIDGES. This program is sponsored by SAFE, a local business. The program is offered Monday through Friday from 3:00-5:30. Many students also attend this program during the summer. Students that participate in BRIDGES receive help with their homework and projects, as well as help studying for tests. Students also participate in STEAM projects at BRIDGES.
B.B. Comer Elementary believes in parental support and involvement of all aspects in the Title I program. The Parent Involvement committee participates in the development of the CIP, School-Parent Compacts, Parent Involvement Plan, and any other area that Title I represents in order to provide the best education for all students. All parents are given surveys at the end of the school year seeking input on activities, training, and materials that the school should offer parents the following school year. Annually the school's Continuous Improvement Plan and the Parent Involvement Plan are reviewed and evaluated. During the Title I Annual Meeting all parents are invited to be a part of the Title I Committee and encouraged to participate in decision-making. At all Title I meetings and parent workshops, parents are encouraged to offer feedback, express concerns, offer suggestions, or ask questions. Contact information is provided for the administration as well as the Title I Resource Teacher/Technology Integration Specialist so that parents have a way to express opinions or concerns.
The BBCES Literacy Team planned and hosted a Literacy Night Trunk or Treat. Popular children's books inspired the decorations for each trunk. Teachers from each grade level and other staff members handed out "tricks" to the parents on ways to help with literacy at home! Students received "treats" and all enjoyed celebrating literacy in a positive way!
Social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter allow us to easily communicate with all parents, faculty, staff and other community members. Our school website is updated on a weekly basis to ensure that everyone is aware of the amazing things happening at BBCES.
