At B. B. Comer Elementary School we strive to create self-motivated learners who guide their own learning. AMSTI Math and Science provides opportunities for students to use hands on experiences to help develop concrete skills. Math instruction includes multiple strategies so students can latch on to what makes sense to them and develop problem solving skills through a series of trial and error as rigor continuously increases. Science lessons revolve around hands on modules that provide authentic learning experiences that help students truly grasp scientific principles while constantly practicing the scientific method. Student roles in STEAM class as well as during classroom projects, make everyone responsible for contributing to their groups learning. Roles are clearly defined and expectations clarified so students are aware of what they are expected to contribute to the group's learning. At B.B. Comer we are striving to develop self-motivated learners.
BBCES is an AMSTI Math and Science school. Teachers in kindergarten through sixth grade have received extensive training on Math and Science standards as well as modules that are implemented with all students. Each 9 weeks, teachers receive AMSTI science kits that come with all of the materials necessary to effectively teach each AMSTI module. Additionally, teachers receive AMSTI math kits full of materials to enhance math instruction in each classroom. Because of our partnership with AMSTI, our students receive hands-on instruction in both math and science and our teachers receive instructional support and coaching throughout the year with certified AMSTI specialists. As a result, our teachers are better equipped to integrate STEAM into their classrooms.

Collaboration in group work has been proven to help create strong academic accomplishment. At BBCES, students are expected to collaborate on a daily basis. When students visit the Innovation Station, they are assigned collaborative roles. These roles ensure that every student does his/her part on the project at-hand and the team can work effectively to complete the project.
Mrs. Voss created a rolling STEAM Lab that is stocked with various STEAM materials. This rolling cart can be found zipping through the hallways at BBCES as students self direct their STEAM learning.
The STEAM Lab is the gateway to STEAM implementation for all students. STEAM classes are held in the Innovation Station at B.B. Comer Elementary School. Each grade comes to the Innovation station once per month; however, more time in the STEAM Lab can be scheduled to ensure that students have access to the resources and supplies necessary to complete their PBL projects. During the scheduled classes, Mrs. Voss implements engaging and rigorous STEAM lessons for all homerooms. Mrs. Voss is a great mentor for all teachers on how to facilitate self-directed student learning through STEM lessons.
