The demands of today's society require much more than calculating numbers. While this is still important, we also expect that our students can solve problems and reason about mathematics in flexible and accurate ways. The shifts in mathematics today reflect the skills and knowledge our students will need to be successful in whatever path in life they choose to take.  Watertown teaches the Mathematics Connecticut Common Core State Standards across all schools.

Standards for Mathematical Practice

The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students. These practices rest on important “processes and proficiencies” with longstanding importance in mathematics education. The first of these are the NCTM process standards of problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, representation, and connections. The second are the strands of mathematical proficiency specified in the National Research Council’s report Adding It Up: adaptive reasoning, strategic competence, conceptual understanding (comprehension of mathematical concepts, operations and relations), procedural fluency (skill in carrying out procedures flexibly, accurately, efficiently and appropriately), and productive disposition (habitual inclination to see mathematics as sensible, useful, and worthwhile, coupled with a belief in diligence and one’s own efficacy).

Programs and Resources

Currently, Watertown Public Schools use the Investigations 3 Common Core K-5 Mathematics Program from Saavas as the primary resource for instruction.  A select number of elementary classrooms are currently piloting the iReady Classroom Mathematics Program from Curriculum Associates for potential adoption in 2022-2023.  Beginning in January, a select number of classrooms will pilot units from the Illustrative Mathematics Program from LearnZillion for potential adoption in 2022-2023.

Additional resources currently utilized in Mathematics are as follows:

Reflex Mathematics

iReady Diagnostic Assessment

iReady Teacher Toolbox Lessons
