Multi-Tiered Support Systems (MTSS)

DATA! DATA! DATA!

MTSS in the WPS

A multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) is a proactive and preventative framework that integrates data and instruction to maximize student achievement and support students social, emotional, and behavior needs from a strengths-based perspective. MTSS offers a framework for educators to engage in data-based decision making related to program improvement, high-quality instruction and intervention, social and emotional learning, and positive behavioral supports necessary to ensure positive outcomes for districts, schools, teachers, and students. The MTSS framework is comprised of four essential components: screening, progress monitoring, multi-level prevention system, and data-based decision making.

Tier One

Universal instruction is the largest tier and is the foundation for the entire framework of MTSS interventions.

Tier 1 covers the high-quality classroom instruction that all students receive. This teaching approach works to accommodate the needs and abilities of all learners and eliminates unnecessary hurdles in the process. It includes proactive classroom management strategies aimed at creating a supportive atmosphere.

Tier Two

Once students are identified as struggling, targeted and group interventions—or evidence-based supports—are provided to help. The students in Tier 2 require a little extra assistance in meeting academic and/or behavioral goals.

Typically, Tier 2 interventions are implemented in small group settings for students who identify similar needs through their assessments. This also helps with systematic efficiency.

Tier Three

If students don’t respond well to Tier 2 supports or demonstrate a more intense need, Tier 3 supports provide more frequent, intense, and individualized interventions. Tier 3 interventions include strategies for maximizing student outcomes during core instruction, as well as supports that can be used at home. Individualized supports in Tier 3 can also include assistance from outside agencies such as behavioral counselors or family therapists.

WPS Provides Enrichment

Providing enrichment in school is a necessary component for ensuring a well-rounded education.  As newly engaged learners begin to understand who they are as a person and as a learner they learn how to become and stay motivated during the school day.  Enrichment has also been shown to improve study skills, an area where many students struggle.  By learning time management skills, test preparation strategies, and other useful study skills, students will see both their grades and confidence improve.  As students move farther along in school, this is even more important as the curriculum content continues to increase and advance.
