Tarore - Tracking & Trapping

 The aim of the programme was to discover 

• What predators and pests are around our local area, 

• What impact they are having on the native wildlife

• Investigate what we can do to influence this

• Trap as many pests as possible in a 3 week period

Students set out tracking tunnels around Motutahae (Cherry Island) and the Bungy Site.  They discovered a range of critters entering these and stealing bait.  The number one culprit was rats.

Robyn from Greening Taupo then came in and showed the students how to build T-Rex trap systems.  Akonga then created traps in pairs or groups of three.

Traps were placed down at Motutahae and spread 40-50m apart. Baited with peanut butter, they were left for periods of 48hrs.
