The aim of the programme was to discover
What predators and pests are around our local area,
What impact they are having on the native wildlife
Investigate what we can do to influence this
Trap as many pests as possible in a 3 week period
Students set out tracking tunnels around Motutahae (Cherry Island) and the Bungy Site. They discovered a range of critters entering these and stealing bait. The number one culprit was rats.
Robyn from Greening Taupo then came in and showed the students how to build T-Rex trap systems. Akonga then created traps in pairs or groups of three.
Traps were placed down at Motutahae and spread 40-50m apart. Baited with peanut butter, they were left for periods of 48hrs.
The areas where people were obviously present produced the highest catch numbers. The final results were...
