I L E

I L E is a whole new classroom, the teachers are Mrs Howard and Mr Mclean. It is easier to learn and I have found it to be more collaborative than primary schools and you adapt to the learning space quickly. It is an amazing room where we manage our own time and some freedom to choose from the learning activities that we were given by the teacher.

We have three levels of agency : CLOSE GRAIN:

Close grain means that you need extra help with learning and you stay close to the teacher.

OUT IN THE YARD:

Out in the yard means that you need help but not that much help in your learning. You can stay in the classroom and if you want to go outside you must ask if you're allowed to go out.

Free range means that you are allowed to manage your own learning and go outside if you want. Sometimes you can even get a hot chocolate.

You must be wondering why these levels of agency are related to chickens is because Mrs Howard always calls us Chooks

We are thinking about changing the names of our agency levels, And I’m excited to share my thinking so we can come up with some great levels of agency for our class.

I love IL E it makes me feel like I fit in and the teachers take primary school learning and make it into something that challenges you but in an easy way. When I first came here I wanted to leave but on my first day I loved it, the teachers recapped some of the things that I learned in my last year of primary. So what i'm trying to say is.

I L E ROCKS!! ( especially Rongokako)

Mantras & Expectations

At the start of the year the whole class got together and we brainstormed some ideas for expectations and mantras. The expectations we agreed upon are based around appropriate levels of noise (1-4). We manage out time wisely, we value student voice, we do the right thing, we clean up after ourselves, we keep our space tidy, we treat each other the way we want to be treated. These are our Mantras. We are whanau and we care about each other, our voice is important, Learning is better 'in the pit',Think-is it true, helpful, inspiring, necessary, kind. respect the pencils/respect and look after property, keep our wonderful teachers happy.

'I like the Mantras and Expectations in our classroom because we created and set them together'-Te Mana McGlade

'They're good because they remind me about what I need to be doing so that I can be the best learner. The expectations make our classroom a nice and happy learning place'-Max Harlow

Agency levels in Rongokako

In Rongokako, we are developing our agency levels together as a class. Our agency levels are going to be named after our school's whakapapa and the 3 chiefs that sit over top of us; Tamatea-pokai-whenua, Rongokako, Tamatea-Ariki-nui. These agency levels will be linked to the various traits that each of these great chiefs left as gifts to our iwi.

As learners, our voice is really important and valued by our teachers. We continue to grow and lead our learning journey as heroes.

Being an agentic learner is about showing our different learning behaviours in and outside of class. Having an "Aha moment is also a part of being agentic.

Being agentic means that we can follow our wonderings and curiosities. We can pursue the learning that we are interested in and we are given the power to follow them. We attend workshops, we run workshops and we have 'Just In Time Workshops'. We also create our own timetable and book workshops that we feel we can benefit from.

We realise that our learning is important and want to succeed; this is why we like our personalised programmes.

Learning to Learn

In Rongokako, we learn how to learn and how we learn best. Knowing when we are learning and what types of learners we are, makes learning much easier because we are able to recognise when we learn best.

We are becoming more aware of 'what to do when we don't know what to do' in our learning and are using our learning behaviours to support the development of our new knowledge.

Connected Learning Experiences

In Rongokako, we connect and collaborate with other students, other classes, other schools Nationally and Globally. One of these experiences would be in #NZReadaloud where we collaborate with other schools around NZ.

We connect in many different ways and use a range of tools. This learning helps us to think about our thinking and has helped us to realise that collaborating with others is way better than working by yourself. Having these connections means we get to work with more people and have more opportunites to hear what others are thinking which helps us to learn more.

"I really like talking to others online" Taine Smith

'I like listening to other people's ideas' Matthew Fenwick

Goal Setting

I find goal setting really easy in Rongokako because there is so much stuff that we learn in here and it gives me heaps of things to work on and to get better at.

Goal setting helps to stay on task and work on what we need to work on. For example, when we share something or show the teachers some work they always give us feedback and feedforward, doing this allows us to reflect on our work and set goals based on our past learning experiences. We are able to identify next steps in our learning so that when we have our one to one conferences with the teachers we are able to talk about what we think we need to work on next, what we have done well and how we went with our learning.

Our teachers sometimes also help us select our goals so that we are always on track with where our learning journey is going.

'I really like to set goals because I know what I am learning and focusing on.' - Grace

'Goal setting helps me understand my next steps' - Mika

Physical Education (P.E.)

This year we have done P.E most weeks. P.E is a way the student's in Rongokako can get some exercise and clear their mind out. P.E also helps students develop competence and confidence to take part in a range of physical activities because we learn the strategies that we need to become better at a range of skills. Heaps of people in Rongokako like P.E, because it is good to get out and do some physical activities and it is good to work together on a range of skills.

Currently we are working on developing our athletics skills and I know that we will be able to compete well on our athletics day.
