Kia Ora Students, this unit is all about discussion and learning about, 'how things worked in the past', and 'how things work now'. There will be many assessment opportunities that will be directed and formed by you the student. You can choose to to a written article, a speech, a presented powerpoint; you can choose to do this as a group or an individual.
Chapter One: Our first korero is about the 'People of the Land', He Tangata, He Tangata. We will explore the journey of how people came to Aotearoa, the story of KUPE, the importance of manaakitanga & whanaungatanga, and how society worked back in the ra. I am looking forward to your discussion! Bring questions and opinions.
Chapter Two: Our second korero will be about 'Captain Cook', Edward Wakefield', New Zealand Land Wars, 'George Grey' and life before the 'Declaration of Independence'. Watch the introductory video and have your say in the Google Doc.
Chapter Three: This next video is based on how laws were made, and the hidden messages behind much of the British Governments decisions. We will explore William Hobson and his role in NZ, The Kingitanga Movement, Dawn Raids and the term 'Leadership' and what it means for us now.
Chapter Four: This korero is around how our Government runs and, what is a CONSTITUTION and what makes it important. You will explore your role as a citizen and how you can make a change.
Chapter Five:This video is about the process of how a BILL becomes LAW. We will explore how you can have your say and what is the best means to do this.
Chapter Six: Kia Ora and welcome to the next step of the Citizens Handbook. We will be exploring the positives and negatives of how Law has been ENFORCED in NZ.
Chapter Seven: The process of court. You will learn the differences between how disputes were handled before and after the arrival of BRITISH. You will explore the process and the advantages of having money COURT.
Chapter Eight: We will explore the idea or trading and bartering. We will explore the difference and influencing factors of trade before and after the arrival of British Explorers.
Chapter Nine: This about how the Government is trying to balance our economy - we will explore the terms, RECESSION & INFLATION. We will analyse the impact of COVID-19 and its effects on the people New Zealand.
Final Chapter of the Series: We will be exploring the idea around FOREIGN AFFAIRS and its influence on New Zealand Society. Will will be more importantly be exploring the idea of CHANGE and how we can make small steps towards achieve a great goal that can and will help other. We want to be effecting change not living or being apart of it!
