Welcome to Fish Chat!! The short course all about fishing. We will begin by learning a few basic knots and tying up some lines. We will then look into making ourselves some skutes. If you don't know what these are, you will find out!! After that we will aim to get out for a fish off the rocks around Taipa and head down to whangaroa to test out some of our homemade skutes and lures.
This is a very simple video demonstrating the basics to making a skute. Essentially it is a jig head with a range of flash, feathers tinsel etc., tied to it. The idea is that it imitates a small fish in the water encouraging predator fish, such as snapper, to attack. We have a range of equipment in class to use, but you are more than welcome to bring in your own items which you think will work! All kinds of colours work in different environments and at different times so test them out!
This is a how to guide to creating your own lure. Although we wont have the wood etc., to create these this year, you are free to experiment in your own time and bring them in for us to look at. Or even as a summer project. They are made out of wood, then carved into shape and sanded. Next coated in primer to protect them from damage from salt water. Next is painting, adding the eyes, eyelets, split ring and hooks. Then they are ready to test in the water!
