In grade 10, Ohio’s Learning Standards call for students to examine a diverse set of literary genres. Students read complex expository works of nonfiction analyze the meaning of both literary and nonfiction works. Through discussion and writing, students will have a deepening grasp of academic English and will utilize the right mode of speech or language when speaking or crafting prose. Students express themselves in diverse writing formats and prose settings, from investigative reports and literary analyses to summations and research papers. Across all writing formats, studentsdevelop a central idea, maintain a coherent focus in their writing, and elaborate the points they make with well-documented and relevant examples, facts, and details. Through writing and conversation, students internalize the expectations of academic written and spoken English and resolve issues regarding usage by consulting style guides.

This course is built around Ohio’s Learning Standards along with pre-AP content as identified by the College Board. Within complex texts, students continue to analyze structure, style, themes, figurative language, symbolism, and tone within various works. Students evaluate historical context and textual details that contribute to various works. Student writing emphasizes expository, analytical, and argumentative writing that forms the basis of academic and professional communication. Students study the elements of writing style, including vocabulary, sentence structure, and logical organization. This course prepares students for the rigorous expectations of AP courses.

English 1100 is a beginning composition course which develops processes for critically reading, writing, and responding to a variety of texts in order to compose clear, concise, expository essays. The course facilitates an awareness of purpose, audience, content, structure and style, while also introducing research and documentation methods. Course reading and writing assignments may be thematically organized.

This course is an intermediate composition course that extends and refines skills in expository and argumentative writing, critical reading, and critical thinking. This course also refines skills in researching a topic, documenting sources, and working collaboratively. Course reading and writing assignments are organized around the diversity of those who comprise the identities.
