Band 6th grade: The 6th Grade Band is designed to develop a high level of musical skill through the study and performance of a wide variety of musical styles. The group will perform at least two concerts throughout the year. One in the winter and one in the spring. There may also be opportunities for additional performances throughout the year. Students are expected to work on their music outside of school in order to provide the most effective rehearsal time for all involved. Students are required to actively participate in band for the ENTIRE school year. Students may not choose to be in band for only one semester. The only exception to this would be with approval from the band director.
Choir 6th grade: Sixth grade students will learn to use their vocal instrument to create a correct and pleasing singing sound. In addition to learning proper vocal production and technique, students will also learn music reading skills, sight-singing skills, part reading skills and performance etiquette. Students will be exposed to a varied repertoire of songs throughout the year in different styles, representing different historical periods. There will be a required concert each semester.
Introduction to Spanish 6th grade: In this semester course, students will learn about and be exposed virtually to various cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world, such as who are native Spanish speakers, bullfighting, running with the bulls, the tango, flamenco, merengue, and quinceañeras. Students will identify the Spanish-speaking countries of the world via maps and experience “virtual trips” to some of them. The class will be taught in English, though students will learn some words in Spanish, such as numbers 0-100, basic greetings and farewells, colors, and how to express their names and ages in Spanish.
Films that Matter 6th grade: This class explores movies that inspire, challenge, and connect to real life. Students will watch and discuss films that focus on important themes like kindness, perseverance, identity, and overcoming obstacles. Through activities and discussions, students will reflect on how these stories relate to their own lives and the world around them.
Project Lead the Way 6th grade: Students will engage in hands-on activities focused on Energy in the Environment focused on windmills with touch of Design and Modeling.
Fine Arts 6th and 7th grade: We introduce the Elements of Art and work through multiple projects that directly relate to certain elements. I pair artists and styles with certain elements and artistic concepts so the students get a historical perspective also. We spend a lot of time on concepts that move students' abilities to be able to create optical illusions and in short make things look as though they have 3 dimensions while being on a 2 dimensional surface.
Drone Technology 7th grade: provide training using drones legally and safely both recreationally and professionally. Also, students will learn the process of drone creation, from selecting components and understanding drone technology to building and testing a fully functional drone.
Introduction to Spanish 7th grade: In this semester course, students will learn about and be exposed virtually to various cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world, such as who are native Spanish speakers, what are typical foods of the Spanish-speaking world, flamenco, holiday traditions, and noteworthy places and people of historical importance related to the Spanish-speaking world. The class will be taught in English, though students will build on the Spanish that they previously learned, including learning months of the year, days of the week, and vocabulary for family, food, and animals. This course is a continuation of the Intro to Spanish 6th grade class.
Project Lead the Way 7th grade: Students will focus on Design and Modeling and will build 10 different gear systems.
Agriculture, Foods, and Natural Resources 7th and 8th grade: This is the first course in the Agricultural and Environmental Systems career field. It introduces students to the pathways that are offered in the Agricultural and Environmental Systems career field. As such, learners will obtain fundamental knowledge and skills in food science, natural resource management, animal science & management, plant & horticultural science, power technology, and biotechnology. Students will be introduced to the FFA organization and begin development of their leadership ability. Every semester is slightly different, they can take the class both in seventh grade and in eighth grade.
Band 7th and 8th grade: The 7th and 8th Grade Band is designed to develop a high level of musical skill through the study and performance of a wide variety of musical styles. The group will perform at least two concerts throughout the year. One in the winter and one in the spring. Additionally, they will perform with the high school marching band at one football game in the fall. There may also be opportunities for additional performances throughout the year including but not limited to Memorial Day Parades, adjudicated events, and solo and ensemble. Students are expected to work on their music outside of school in order to provide the most effective rehearsal time for all involved. Students are required to actively participate in band for the ENTIRE school year. Students may not choose to be in band for only one semester. The only exception to this would be if there were extenuating circumstances with the student’s schedule and any change will require approval from the band director.
Choir 7th and 8th grade: Seventh and Eighth grade students will learn to further use their vocal instrument to create a correct and pleasing singing sound. In addition to proper technique they will work on music reading skills, sight-singing skills, more in depth part reading skills and performance etiquette. Students will be exposed to a varied repertoire of songs throughout the year in different styles, and or languages, representing different historical periods. There will be a required concert each semester.
School Newspaper 8th grade: SVMS Newspaper allows you creative freedom to tell the story of the halls you walk. With several options to write about each week, you can explain a little bit of everything that's happening in the Valley. Weekly jobs include: Student spotlight, teacher/student interview, sports columnist, SV Weather, Entertainment and Pop Culture, food critic, and opinion columnist.
