Beyond Move On When Reading focuses on targeted 1:1 and small group tutoring based on an appointment system. We like to think of it as a "Doctor's Office." We found that in traditional summer school as well as before and after school tutoring groups of students where given a time and place to meet and often they simply failed to show up. This could be for a variety of reasons- transportation, other appointments, inconvenience, or just plain forgetting. Whatever the reason attendance was often very poor, especially if the program was free of charge. In addition, large group tutoring tends to be "one size fits all" focusing on the needs of the group, rather than the individual student. Beyond Move On When Reading is different. Teachers are given a small case load of students who they meet with online 1:1 or in a small group at an agreed upon time- an appointment. Because the tutoring is online, by appointment, or in person if that meets the needs of the student better, teachers can be flexible in setting up appointment times that best meet the needs of the teacher, student, and family in order to ensure attendance. If the student is late or fails to show, the teacher will reach out to the family to reschedule so that no time is lost. The end result is near 100% attendance.
Further, since tutoring is 1:1 or in small groups, when appropriate, the teacher can target individualized instruction to meet the student's specific needs. Again, using the "Doctor's Office" analogy, the teacher, like a doctor, prescribes just the right intervention to meet the needs of the student, rather than a "one size fits all" or prepackaged intervention program, or worse simply monitoring students on a computer program.
