That depends on your situation. We priced out tutors at $35/hr. plus benefits. We went with a 1:1 model with each tutor/teacher taking 4-6 students. This allowed for better results, but has a greater cost when compared to a traditional summer school or after school program where the teacher might have as many as 15-25 students. On the other hand, we saved considerably by not having to pay for facility costs and bussing. We already had Title I Instructional and Reading Specialists in place. We worked with them to change some of their workload. We believed heavily in PLC time and worked time into the tutoring schedule to allow for that.
Having a strong team is important. You will want the support of District Office- perhaps curriculum/teaching and learning, and Title I. You will need School Leadership Support- Principal/Assistant Principal and Instructional Specialists. You will want your Community/Social Emotional Support Professionals- Guidance Counselors, Community Specialists, Social Worker, and others. You will need Teaching Support including both teachers and if possible paraprofessionals. Finally you will want community and family support! We recommend you build a comprehensive team that can pull together the support, resources, and commitments you will need for a long-term, comprehensive B-MOWR program.
Yes. But it is worth the work. We began by using a common spreadsheet to monitor student progress, but are now using a purpose built data dashboard. On the other hand, one of the benefits of the original process is that it keeps student's names top of mind for everyone involved in the progress monitoring process.
Yes, we feel it is. Check out our results page to see why. We feel strongly that in education today a sound foundation of reading skills is essential for student's future success. Every student can and will succeed if given the right tools.
