In 2020 Margaret Serna and others began to work on the Beyond Move On When Reading Pilot Project based on her experiences as a principal and the need for a summer reading program for students reading below grade level. Originally envisioned as a traditional summer school small group reading intervention for 2nd and 3rd grade students reading below grade level, the project soon was forced to adapt by the closing of schools due to the Global Pandemic. While other summer school opportunities were cancelled, the B-MOWR team pressed forward with a 1:1 online tutoring model that became a great success. Inspired by lessons learned in the pilot program, as well as her previous experiences in turning a failing school into an A label school, Ms. Serna and the leadership team expanded the program into the 4 Phase Beyond Move On When Reading Initiative which included targeted 1:1 and small group intensive tutoring, Instructional Specialists as case workers, Ongoing Progress Monitoring, Transitions into Middle and High School, and most of all, Accountability for all.
It is our commitment to assure success for all our students by doing “whatever it takes” to guide them to become competent and confident readers.
Phase 1 - 2020 Beyond - Move On When Reading Summer Jumpstart Program (one on one reading interventions services for recommended students).
Phase 2 - Year 2 Support and Progress Monitoring of identified B-MOWR students.
These selected B-MOWR students that have completed the Phase 1 will be assigned a Reading Case Worker ( site assigned Title I Reading Specialist) that will be responsible for the 20 B-MOWR student’s reading progress monitoring. Each reading specialist will be responsible for progress monitoring or reading for the assigned students that have completed Phase 1. The Reading Specialist will collaborate with the B-MOWR student’s classroom teacher (through regular schedule PLC collaborative meetings, provide additional resources if needed and provide parental engagement activities and resources to promote each child’s literacy skills. At any given time, if the student is not progressing, recommendation for a referral to the Student Study Team remains an option.
Phase 3 - Students will continue to be monitored: Grade 3, Grade 4 and Grade 5. At this point, they will continue to receive intervention services if needed. Those students that have become proficient readers will continue to be monitored and if appropriate placed in accelerated reading programs. As we add 100 students per year, we will have supported over 300 students in reaching reading proficiency!!!
Phase 4 - Elementary Instructional Specialists will collaborate with Middle School Instructional Specialists to facilitate the successful transition of identified B-MOWR students to 6th grade. Middle School Instructional Specialists will follow-up with identified B-MOWR students to ensure success in Middle School and beyond.
