This assignment was about writing about a time you had to leave something you love behind. I choose to write about my experience of moving from NY to NC in the summer of 6th grade. I was highly scared and shy, leaving everything I knew and going to a new place with lots of unfamiliar settings was upsetting. I struggled a ton that following year learning how to fit in and experiencing a new setting, it was a huge adjustment. I am proud of myself for writing this piece, as it reflects my thoughts, emotions, and mindset at the time and how now at 16 in 10th grade, looking back at my 7th grade self, I wish I had a more open-mind set to moving rather then looking at everything negatively. It was an simple piece to write, but difficult on how I should express my emotions in my writing. If I had to do this piece again, I would want to make it longer as going more in-depth on specific scenes that made me very sad when moving. Especially, using more vocabulary throughout the piece. I learned when writing this how to incorporate emotions in a way that it does not sound cheesy to the reader. Also, I learned how to connect your intro to the end, like putting a bow on a present.
This assignment was about choose a poetry artist and relating pieces of their work to songs. I love music and its a great way to communicate figurative language to our ears. Jason Reynold's work is filled of beautiful messages, each line having an elaborate meaning. I started to read his book "Long Way Down" about a boy who saw his father get murdered, decides down a 60 second elevator if he should take revenge or not. This story is inspired from Jason's personal experience of witnessing his good friend getting murdered and after all his friends met up to decide if they should seek revenge. While doing this assignment, I found at first relating my songs to Jason's work difficult, but I started to brain storm more and find similarities in the lyrics. If I had to do this assignment again, I would have liked to explore other poetry artists and search their work to relate to songs like, Lin Manuel Miranda or Tupac. I am proud of myself for relating 5 songs I listen to everyday that expressed similar ideals to what Jason wrote in his poems. I related songs like "Brain Damage" to his poem "Long Way Down" as it book talks about seeking revenge and what they experienced that is making them think such a heavy ideal.
This assignment was about talking about a piece of poetry and explaining all its components. I choose "To All The Virgins" by Robert Herrick as it's a very expressive work of art, filled with a ton of figurative language and meaning. Analyzing poetry has always been a pastime for me, ever since the 5th grade I loved to make poetry about dogs in my laundry basket. I found it had a way to express our thoughts in a way that sounded beautiful and expressive. While doing this assignment, I found finding the meaning in this poem difficult at first, but when I explored the author and the date this poem was wrote, I saw why their was a stereotype to women. Looking at this piece in a different perspective helped me fully understand what the author was trying to convey as his message to the reader. What I would do differently if I did this assignment again would be to paint or visually express what I see in this poem rather then write what I am seeing and relating it figuratively to imagery. I am very proud of my work as this poem, "To All The Virgins" has a deep meaning of the beauty of staying young, as this is your prime time to get a man. It also personifies elements like time and temperature to relate to the short cycle of life.
Overall, English 2 honors has been an amazing class. My teacher, Mrs. Summers is very creative and inspiring; making assignments fun and always helping me out. I loved that she related what we were learning to current examples like Encanto and Cinderella. I highly enjoyed english this semester as a class I looked forward to attending & can't wait to take the skills I went into more depth here for AP LANG!
