Beautiful Oops

"Skyborn"

Paper, sharpie pen, alcohol markers

9" x 6"

The starting point for this pice was to figure out what how to make something out of the spilled drops of ink or the "beautiful oops".  Right off the bat I saw a strand of beads in the ink drops, but I didn't know what to build around that.  I ended up deciding that the beads would be going around the side profile of a person. But what kind of person? Originally, I thought about drawing a headshot of a bride with the beads coming off the vail, but that wouldn't be related to me as an artist at all. When I was at home I looked at skeches and drawings I've done of original characters trying to get inspiration.  I did not what to just draw one of my characters foe this assignment because wanted to do something original.  I settled on drawing inspiration from a previous concept of a girl with outer space as hair. I incorporated that element of the design into the drawing while keeping the rest different.

This drawing was done on a half piece of artist paper that had previously ben splashed with ink. I used pencil to sketch out the character and background. I then used pen to outline the face, details in the hair, and shapes in the background. Finally, I used alcohol marker to color in the drawing and shade.

When I was making this piece I had trouble with the first sketch, it just didn't look right to me. I had not drawn a side profile in a long time and instead of jumping right to the finished piece I wanted to do some warm up sketches. In my personal sketch book I drew out a few side profiles to figure out the anatomy, after that I went back to this piece with slightly more skill and confidence.
