Mixed Media Drawing

Mixed Media Drawing: Emma's Cat.

Material: Pastel paper, Charcoal, Charcoal pencil, White colored pencil, Eraser.

Size of paper: 11 x 16

Idea: For this piece I was assigned to make a charcoal drawing. I decided to make one of my cat Smitty because he's so cute! I was inspired to choose this specific photo because its him sleeping on top of the couch which is one of his favorite spots.

Materials: For this piece I used a pastel paper and charcoal, The paper was the pastel paper so the charcoal could blend easier and you could blend with your hands without it taking forever. I used a white coloring pencil so I could draw the whiskers and Smitty's really tiny little eyelashes.

Process: The process for this artwork seemed simple but was very difficult and time consuming. I had to get all the shading and colors just right so it could match the actual reference image. In order to do this piece I made a grid and went sqaure by square drawing the outlines and shading only a little bit. Once I had finished the rough drawing I went in square by square again adding details. Once the details were done I went straight in and added any needed details and fixed all of the shading. I did all of that shading and detail because I wanted the drawing to look like an actual cat and not a blob.Â
