Zine

A Zine From 2020

For this assignment, we were tasked with creating a Zine— a self-published mini magazine. To due this, I used a single sheet of printing paper and dual brush markers. With the paper I used the process shown in the video shared with us on Google Classroom to fold it into a 6-page booklet. I then sketched out my rough ideas for each page before begging to outline in black pen. I soon discovered that by drawing in marker first and then going over the outlines in pen aloud me to cover up any mistakes, so I switched to that method instead.

I used elements of line, color, and shape to create my characters and objects. The drawings were quite simple, but I found that that helped them stay unified and coherent. I layered the marker in some areas to make different shades and values in order to create the illusion of depth and shadow.

To stay with the given theme, my Zine tells the story of a person during the COVID-19 pandemic who is going through the process of buying a new house. Over the past few weeks almost everything has been moved online, and although I haven't experienced this exact predicament I think we've all gone through the process of misunderstanding or not getting what you asked for through the internet without in-person connection. I don't usually draw with pen and marker, so this was a little out of my comfort zone. I am pround of how neat the drawings are, even if I don't think they are very good.
