Artist Statement

For this assignment we were given a drawing prompt to work off of. My prompt was “Draw a one-eyed monster riding a motorcycle while drinking a milkshake from a straw”. I decided to create a baby-plant monster with the idea that he had not yet grow big enough to drive his monster truck. I’m not sure if this particular piece of art has a lot of connection to my life, but I do think that the plant-guy looks kind of like one of the creatures from Epic, a movie I watched about seven times in two weeks when I was seven.

For this art piece I started by sketching the rough shape of the monster and motorcycle with hard graphite pencil. I then went over the lines with a black ballpoint pen that I find works just as well (if not better than) thin sharpies. Finally, I used Dual Brush markers to color in the plant-monster, motorcycle, and his accessories. The piece is done on a page of mixed media paper from my sketchbook.

In this project color, line, and shape are the key elements of art I used to bring unity and movement to the piece. Due to the cartoon-style and my use of markers, the bright colors are the most prominent. The shape and lines of the scarf, the arch of the monster’s back, and the headlights all contribute to the movement of the piece. When I started this project, I thought we were only going to have a few minutes in class. Because of this I opted to go with a much simpler, cartoon-ish style, which is not something I would normally do. To be honest, if I had the chance I would restart and be a bit more creative with the prompt and detailed with my art. I think I would use colored pencil instead. The monster would be big, blue, and shaggy, the motorcycle tiny, and the milkshake from Friendly’s (because it’s a friendly monster).
