Final Circle Project

Artist Statement

For the final 2D design project, we were instructed to use a template of uniform, 4x5 circles. I chose to create a somewhat abstract piece filled with vibrant colors and soft, swirly lines. I like how the warm circles pop against the cool background, and how they almost look like lips twisting in weird expressions.

For this work I used watercolor paper and brush markers. I printed out the circle template, taped it to the back of the watercolor paper, and held it up against a window to trace. I purposely used vibrant warm and cool tones to contrast each other, with the addition of negative space in the blank circles. I have a large variety of brush markers, something like 70 different shades, so I picked out my favorite warm and cool tones to use.

I originally planned to approach the assignment in a completely different way; my first thought when I saw the template was that it looked like one of the plastic holders for soda cans that are often found littering the ocean and hurting sealife. I wanted to do a watercolor representing that. I’m not sure what really caused me to change my mind, but I haven’t done a lot of abstract in the past and I enjoyed the process of this piece a lot. It was simple but fun, and I liked picking out the colors. Next steps in my project might be to add some white highlights using white acrylic paint, or to incouperate thin black pen drawings into the piece somehow.
