Artist Statement

For this assignment we were instructed to make three drawings that would be used as a time-capsule comparison for our art at the end of the year. The prompts were your hand in an interesting position (I choose to draw my hand in a fist with the pinky and thumb extended- apparently this is called the “shaka” hand in Hawaii), draw a part of your face, and draw something you use everyday. Obviously the hand and lips are based off of my own, and the hair ties are something I have to use (and usually end up breaking) every single day.

For all three drawings I worked on a page of mixed media paper from my sketchbook. I started with harder lead, outlining the rough shapes and proportions, then moved in with softer lead for shading and definition. When I was finished I went in with a sharp eraser to clean up my edges and add highlights.

When deciding what to draw for my everyday object, I started by looking around my desk, knowing that was where I would be sure to find something I used everyday. I can across a pile of hair ties, which I picked through to find one with some sort of pattern to add a little intrigue. I found a plastic spiral tie, which I was able to use elements of line and shape to give dimension to. In all of my drawings I used value and texture in order to create a sense of unity between the pieces and add contrast (especially to the lips). I think my next step would be to add more shading to the hand so it would have more of a contrast against the page. Especially compared to the other drawings it’s far too light.
