Artist Statement

Both projects were intended to be logo designs. For the first, my prompt was to draw a logo that included the word “computer”. To add an element of intrigue and design into the word, I made the “o” resemble the power button of my laptop, and incorporated the wires of a motherboard into my words. For the second project, the prompt was to draw a logo that somehow related to our school. We could interpret this anyway- our art could reference a club, sports team, the building, the arts, etc. I choose the design a logo for the music program at Freeport High School. Each symbol in the logo is designed to look like a symbol in music (forte, two sixteenth notes, and a G clef, respectively) and a letter in the commonly used abbreviation for our high school, FHS. I chose to design my logo to represent the music program at FHS because I have participated in music ensembles (band and chorus) since fifth grade. Now, I sing in Chamber Choir.

To make both of these logo designs, I used hard graphite pencil on mixed media paper to make thumbnail sketches. I then Used the same hard graphite to outline my final logos, and a thin black sharpie pen to go over the pencil and shade in the letters. I used an eraser to get rid of any remaining pencil marks so the piece would be cleaner.

outline For both of my pieces, I began by making a few thumbnail sketches with different interpretations of the prompt. For the computer logo, I ended up combining two of my thumbnail ideas together to make the final product. The FHS logo took a little longer to come up with, as I wasn’t sure what aspect of the school I wanted to focus on. At first, I thought it would be cool to make up a club, and in doing that I could incorporate some interesting design into my work. All of the thumbnails I made for that, however, didn’t sit right. None of them actually felt connected to FHS. So I turned to my original idea that I hadn’t been able to think of anything for- the Music program. From there I came up with each symbol and how it represented a letter of FHS. For the computer logo, my next step would e to add more of the motherboard design and make the art a little more interesting. For the FHS logo, I would start looking at how to make it into an online image.
